Custom Orthotics

Foot, ankle and knee pain can all be caused by one underlying problem: lack of arch support. While some pain is caused by improperly fitting shoes or shoes that are uncomfortable to wear, the most common reason you have chronic foot and ankle pain is that your feet aren’t supported as much as they need to be. One solution to this problem is custom foot orthotics. Pickering and Ajax residents can get these helpful shoe supports at The Physio Clinic at West Durham. We offer full biomechanical examination to identify the cause of your problem and make the appropriate custom foot orthotics and/or braces to suit your needs.

CUSTOM ORTHOTICS IN PICKERING FOR THE PERFECT FIT

Orthotics are custom made inserts that go into your shoes to address your particular foot disorder. They provide support, correct alignment and cushioning for your feet to help improve your comfort and performance. Combined with appropriate footwear, our custom orthotics can help effectively treat various foot and leg issues including:

  • Heel, arch and forefoot pain

  • Shin splints

  • Injuries to lower limbs

  • Pain and complications from diabetes and arthritis

Because they are made specifically to fit your feet, orthotics come in a variety of shapes and sizes. Depending on their structure, orthotics may not fit in all of your shoes. They can be designed to fit into different types of shoes, such as:

  • Dress shoes

  • Standard shoes

  • Sports shoes

  • Children’s shoes

This means you may require more than one set of custom orthotics in Pickering. If you are an avid sports player you’ll want a pair of sports orthotics, and if you work at an office you’ll need orthotics that fit into your dress shoes as well. We also make inserts to fit diabetic needs and braces to help with ankle stability.

HOW CUSTOM ORTHOTICS ARE MADE

To create your custom orthotics in Pickering, we first take an impression of your foot in the corrected sub-talar neutral position. This means you must be in a non-weight bearing position such as lying down or sitting. Our casts are made in plaster moulding, but if you cannot lie on your stomach or have other symptoms, we can take a partial weight bearing neutral impression of your feet in foam.

Because the impression we take is of your feet in the sub-talar neutral position, the orthotics created will help guide your feet into the proper alignment. This movement will help reduce pain and other symptoms you may have from the biomechanical irregularities you have in your feet.

We take measurements of the cast and make marks on the negative cast impression, allowing us to specify exactly how the orthotic should be designed to correct for the biomechanical irregularities of your feet. We then make a plaster positive mould from the negative cast. The markings from the negative impression transfer onto the new plaster positive to help us create your custom orthotics.
