What Is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture is a time-tested healing method originating from Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). It involves the gentle insertion of fine, sterile needles into specific points on the body to stimulate the nervous system, restore balance, and encourage your body’s natural healing processes.

Whether you’re dealing with chronic pain, stress, or digestive issues, acupuncture offers a holistic approach to improving overall well-being without relying on medication.

FAQs

1) What happens on my first acupuncture visit?

Your Registered Acupuncturist (R.Ac) reviews your health history, assesses your concerns, explains the plan, and obtains consent. Very fine, single-use sterile needles are placed at specific points and left in for 20–30 minutes. You’ll get after-care and a suggested treatment schedule.

2) Does acupuncture hurt?

Most people feel little to no pain—often a dull, heavy, or warm sensation that fades quickly. If anything feels sharp or uncomfortable, we adjust immediately.

3) How many sessions will I need?

Acute issues can improve in 3–6 visits; persistent or long-standing conditions often need 6–12. Your plan is customized and may change based on your progress.

4) What conditions can acupuncture help with?

Common reasons we see in Pickering include neck/shoulder/back pain, headaches and migraines, TMJ/jaw pain, sciatica, stress, anxiety, insomnia, digestive complaints, and women’s-health concerns. If you’re unsure, ask—we’ll tell you honestly if acupuncture is appropriate or refer you to another provider.

5) Is acupuncture safe?

Yes—performed by a regulated R.Ac using single-use, sterile needles and clean-needle technique. Minor temporary effects (light soreness, redness, or fatigue) can occur and typically resolve within 24 hours.

6) Who provides the treatment?

Treatments are performed by a Registered Acupuncturist (R.Ac) licensed with Ontario’s regulator (CTCMPAO). Training includes acupuncture theory, safety, anatomy, and supervised clinical hours.

7) Is acupuncture covered by insurance? Do you direct bill?

Many extended health plans cover treatments by an R.Ac. Coverage varies by plan; check your policy or benefits portal. We can provide receipts with the practitioner’s registration details and can assist with direct billing where available.

8) What’s the difference between acupuncture and dry needling?

Acupuncture is a regulated profession in Ontario (R.Ac) that uses traditional frameworks and modern evidence to treat whole-person concerns. Dry needling (IMS) targets myofascial trigger points and may be performed by other regulated providers within their scope. Both use fine needles; the approach and training differ.

9) Can acupuncture support fertility or IVF?

Acupuncture is commonly used to help manage stress, improve sleep, and support menstrual-cycle-related symptoms. We coordinate with your medical team; it’s not a replacement for medical care.

10) Can I combine acupuncture with physiotherapy, chiropractic, massage, or cupping?

Yes—many Pickering patients get their best results with an integrated plan. We can combine acupuncture with manual therapy, exercise, and options like electro-acupuncture or cupping when appropriate.

11) What should I wear and how should I prepare?

Wear loose, comfortable clothing that allows access to arms/legs, back, or abdomen. Eat a light snack beforehand, stay hydrated, and avoid intense workouts immediately after your first few visits.

12) Who should consult their doctor first or avoid acupuncture?

Let us know if you’re pregnant, on blood thinners, have a bleeding disorder, implanted electronic devices (for electro-acupuncture), uncontrolled medical conditions, or active skin infection at the site. We’ll modify or defer treatment as needed.
